Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions?

How does placenta donation work?

The placenta is removed as a standard part of every delivery. If you choose to donate yours, a physician will carefully transfer it to a trained Tides Medical professional, who will be present during your delivery.

How is the donated placenta used?

With your consent, your donation may be used to develop products, test new methods or treatments, or help train medical professionals. One donation has the potential to create over 100 products, which can be used to treat recipient patients with a variety of medical needs.

If I donate, can I still have more children?

Yes! The placenta is removed after every birth, regardless of donation. It has no effect on your reproductive health.

Is a blood test required?

Yes. A blood sample is obtained from the mother during a routine blood draw scheduled by the hospital. The blood is tested for infectious diseases, such as HIV, syphilis, HTLV, CMV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Will I get the results of the blood test?

The results are used to confirm that the donation is safe for use and are generally not shared; however, confirmed positive results will be reported per applicable laws and regulations

Will it cost me anything to donate?

No. All expenses related to donation are covered by Tides.

Will donation affect me or my baby and the care we receive?

No. Donation will not affect you or your baby. It does not delay medical care, nor will it interfere with the care you or your baby receives.

Will I be compensated for my donation?

No. While cord blood banking is not currently a service offered by Tides, the cord blood may be drawn before the placenta is donated.

Why should I trust LOFT and Tides Medical with my Donation?

Tides is accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks* in every aspect of birth tissue, from donation through transplantation. All medical information and confidentiality rights released with your consent shall be protected by Tides, in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
